13 transcontinental countries with landmasses on more than one continent

• •

As you know, Turkey enjoys a unique geographical location, connecting Asia and Europe. But when it comes to intercontinental countries, it's not alone. Yes, there are countries located in different parts of the planet that share landmasses on two or more continents, connecting them. Some of these countries actually physically connect two different continents and are called contiguous transcontinental countries. The territories of some countries are scattered across vast territories and have no physical connection to each other. Non-contiguous transcontinental countries, such as the United States, Great Britain, France, and Spain, serve as bridges between different continents and cultures through their overseas territories. Here are 13 countries that connect different continents, from Turkey to France.

1. Türkiye

Of course, Türkiye tops the list of intercontinental countries, those connecting two or more continents. As you know, our country connects the Asian and European continents.

2. Egypt

Egypt, like Turkey, is a neighboring intercontinental country. Much of Egypt's land, rich in ancient cultural treasures, is located in Africa. However, Egyptians also live in Asia. This region, known as the Sinai Peninsula, serves as a land bridge between the African and Asian continents.

3. Russia

Russia holds the title of the world's largest contiguous transcontinental country. Its capital is Moscow, and St. Petersburg is a city located on the European continent. The region encompassing these two cities is sometimes referred to as European Russia, and a significant portion of Russia's population lives here. The Ural Mountains are generally considered the boundary dividing Russia's European and Asian territories.

4. Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan, like Russia, is one of the countries that has territory in both Europe and Asia.

5. United States of America

The United States does not physically connect two distinct continents, as Turkey does. The country's entire continental territory is located on the North American continent. However, other geographic regions are also under US sovereignty. For example, the state of Hawaii is part of the geographic region of Oceania, which some sources consider a continent.

6. United Kingdom

intercontinental countries

As you know, the United Kingdom is a European country. However, there are dozens of different geographic regions across the planet where the Union Jack flies. Bermuda, for example, is just one of these regions. In other words, the United Kingdom is also considered one of the countries that connects different continents.

7. France

France, which bears the legacy of an empire that once dominated a vast geographical area, is a country with overseas territories on several continents, particularly in South America and Africa. Although it doesn't physically connect two or more continents, it still manages to find a place among intercontinental countries.

8. Spain

Spain is another country that geographically and culturally connects Europe and Africa. The country consists of two regions in North Africa, known as Ceuta and Melilla. The famous Canary Islands, controlled by Spain, are also generally considered part of Africa, not Europe.

9. Portugal

intercontinental countries

The Azores Islands are located in northwest North Africa, approximately 1,500 kilometers from the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. However, the region remains under Portuguese control. For this reason, Portugal, like Spain, stands out as a country that bridges Africa and Europe in various ways.

Greenland, the world's largest island and part of North America, is an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark. This makes Denmark a functioning bridge between the North American continent and Europe.

11. Greece

intercontinental countries

As you know, many islands in the Aegean Sea are controlled by Greece. However, almost all of these islands are part of the Asian continent. For this reason, Greece, which has no land connection with Asia, is included in the class of countries that connect two different continents.

12. Italy

intercontinental countries

Italy, a European country, controls two islands: Lampedusa and Lampione, located south of Sicily. However, geographically, these islands belong to Africa, not Europe.

13. Venezuela

intercontinental countries

Today, the Venezuelan flag flies on several islands that make up North America, particularly Los Roques. Thus, Venezuela, although actually a South American country, has very strong ties to North America. In this regard, it can safely be said that the country serves as a link between two distinct continents.
