What is the difference between study and studies?

• •

«"Studia" primarily refers to higher education at a university leading to a bachelor's, engineer's, or master's degree, while "studium" is a word with several meanings: a dissertation or detailed analysis (e.g., a case study), an artistic sketch, or the name of a department or faculty, such as foreign language studies or former postgraduate studies. Grammatically, "studia" is the plural of "studium," but in practice the two words often mean very different things.

To sum it up

  • Higher education (study) – post-secondary education at a university, leading to a diploma and professional title.
  • Study – dissertation, analysis, artistic essay or name of the department/faculty (for example, department of foreign languages).
  • «Higher educational institution» — is an old but still common name for an institution of higher education, rather than a university.
  • Postgraduate education It is intended for university graduates and does not provide a new professional title, but only a certificate.

Study or studies – what do the dictionaries say?

The Polish dictionary PWN lists several meanings of the word studio :

  • scientific dissertation on a specific topic, such as "research on the Polish countryside.".
  • Detailed analysis something presented in a book or film – hence the expressions «case study» or «study of loneliness» in reviews.
  • Preparatory work an artist's work that is not a finished composition - for example, a sketch of a hand, a sketch from life.
  • university faculty or an independent higher or post-secondary educational institution.

In everyday use the word «studies» means studying at a university ("I'm going to college," "I've graduated") or studying a topic in depth ("studying the history of a region"). Formally, it's the plural of "studium," but in the context of higher education, it's used as a stand-alone noun.

Option: research, research, research

Nouns ending in -um (museum, high school, study) are not declined in the singular: "to studium", "bez tego studium", "o tego studium". In the plural, they are declined normally: "studia", "studiów", "studiom", "o studia". Therefore, the form «"studiów"» in the title is the genitive plural - "I don't have studies", "after completing my studies".

Higher education – what does it include?

In accordance with the Law on Higher Education and Science, training is conducted as follows:

  • First cycle training – full-time, lasts at least 6 semesters, and if it leads to the acquisition of engineering competencies – at least 7 semesters; culminates in the receipt of a bachelor's or engineer's degree.
  • Secondary education – from 3 to 5 semesters, culminating in a Master's degree (or Master of Engineering).
  • Unified system of training in master's degree programs – from 9 to 12 semesters, for example, in law or medicine.

Part-time study may take longer. To begin a first-cycle or long-term master's degree program, you must have a certificate upon completion of secondary school (matura), and for the second-cycle program, a diploma. Graduates can then continue their studies in doctoral studies.

Higher education institution (post-secondary education)

It is still used in colloquial speech and in the names of many educational institutions. the term "post-secondary education"« . In educational regulations, such an educational institution is called post-secondary . It accepts individuals with a secondary or vocational education—a high school diploma is usually not required; completion of high school is sufficient. The course lasts a maximum of 2.5 years, and after passing professional exams, the student receives a professional diploma. This is a vocational education, not a higher education—post-secondary education does not award bachelor's or master's degrees.

Study of foreign languages and other university disciplines

Many universities have departments called "studium" (department of foreign languages), for example, Department of Foreign Languages (offering students language courses) or the Department of Physical Education. Classes in these departments are part of the curriculum, not a separate major with its own diploma.

Postgraduate studies

The law uses the term "« postgraduate study »" It lasts for at least two semesters and is intended for individuals who have already received a university education. In the sense of the law, it is not considered training (it does not grant a professional title) – upon completion, a diploma is issued certificate of completion of postgraduate studies, confirming additional qualifications.
