Poems in the style of Ivan Bunin about love: feelings and lyrics

• •

Ivan Bunin is one of the greatest Russian poets, whose work is permeated with the theme of love in all its manifestations. In his poems, love is presented as a fleeting yet all-consuming emotion, tinged with sadness and the anticipation of separation. Bunin extols the beauty of the moment when two hearts unite, and the bitterness of loss when love fades, leaving only memories. His lyric poetry is distinguished by exquisite imagery, precise detail, and a philosophical understanding of the nature of human emotions. The poet sees in love not only joy but also suffering, not only happiness but also the inevitable separation. Each of Bunin's poems about love is a miniature drama, told through the prism of subtle psychology and a profound understanding of the human soul.

The Last Bumblebee

Black velvet bumblebee, golden shoulder strap, mournfully humming like a melodious string, why did you fly into this hot afternoon, into this empty and dullly ailing house? Everything has faded, passed... You are alone in this house. You hum beneath the mountain of the ceiling beam, and in the distance, in satin languor, I hear the quiet ringing of the golden and final line. Oh, how loudly you hummed that distant summer in this house, when we sat together, your hum sounded like a familiar greeting, and now you sing to me of autumn's past.

Evening

We always only remember happiness. And happiness is everywhere. Maybe it is this autumn garden behind the barn And the clean air pouring in the window. In the bottomless sky, with a light white edge, A cloud rises and shines. I have been watching it for a long time... We see little, we know, But happiness is given only to those who know. The window is open. A bird chirped and sat On the windowsill. And from the books I look away with my tired gaze for a moment. The day is evening, the sky is empty. The rumble of the threshing machine is heard in the barn... I see, I hear, I am happy. Everything is within me.

Loneliness

And the wind, and the rain, and the mist, Over the cold desert of water. Here life has died until spring, The gardens are empty until spring. I'm alone at the dacha. It's dark for me At the easel, and a draft comes in through the window. Yesterday you were with me, But you're already sad with me. In the evening of a rainy day You began to seem like a wife to me... Well, goodbye! Somehow I'll live until spring Alone - without a wife... Today the same clouds are coming endlessly - ridge after ridge. Your trace in the rain by the porch Has blurred, filled with water. And it hurts me to look alone Into the gray pre-evening darkness.

Night and the hoary distance

Night and the gray distance, a ridge of smoky clouds... Ghostly white, a star drowns in them. Nature's gaze fades. The waters rise like gray-blue smoke above its path. The forest breathes a sleepy haze. In the river, the moon trembles with a pale gaze... The rustle of the fields is heard. I will remember a spring day, I will remember the previous May... Dear, like a vision, the land appeared to me. There, where in the moonlight the steppe lay around, there, oh youth, I will not forget you.

The Forgotten Fountain

In the garden, where the ivy darkens with age, Where the sweet smell of moisture and grass, A forgotten fountain stands among the lindens. It dreams in the quiet hour, when the sunset ray freezes in the foliage of the dense alleys And the pale moon rises above. I remember that June day and the heat, Your white umbrella over your back, How you walked to the fountain, your gaze was quiet and bright, And the pattern of transparent branches quietly fell upon the sand... And now the years have passed, And I wander alone, as then.

Far away from my native land

In a land far from my home, I dream of the freedom of quiet villages, I dream of a plain, snowy and silent, And your image, dear as a spring day. I see, as before, a simple room, I hear your voice and trembling speech, I remember your sad look and wicked smile, I remember everything that I can no longer protect. All is past... You are far away, my desired friend, And what was is not given to return. Only memory shines, like stars in a foggy sky, And a long-forgotten window aches in my soul.

The bird has a nest

The bird has a nest, the beast has a hole. How bitter was my young heart, When I left my father's yard, To say goodbye to my native home! The beast has a hole, the bird has a nest. How my heart beats, sorrowfully and loudly, When I enter, crossing myself, into a strange, rented house With my already shabby knapsack! But you, my friend, were my home and my destiny, You were everything to me - both heaven and earth. Now I am a wanderer, beggar and blind, Walking somewhere following a dream.

A star trembles among the universe

A star trembles among the universe, flickering with a faint light. In the silent and humble night, it burns above a quiet house. It burns like that love that once illuminated us, that, fading again and again, never died. Even though years and days have passed, even though fate has separated us— But somewhere in the sky they are, those old stars that were. And just like a star in my heart, my love trembles imperishably, and shines for me, as it did then, through the darkness of universal oblivion.

Roses

Glittering clouds clung to the azure of a fiery day. Two roses opened beneath the window—two cups filled with fire. Through the window, into the cool twilight of the house, a green, sultry garden peered, and the stifling languor of the hay exuded a sweet aroma. At times, sonorous and heavy, high in the sky a thunderous rumble rumbled... But in the warm heat the flowerbed silently blossomed. And you sat before me, and looked tenderly into my face, and the roses shone with fiery beauty, illuminating the entire ring.

We met by chance on the corner

We met by chance, on the corner. I was walking quickly - and suddenly I saw her. I remembered everything: autumn, and the ashes of the fireplace, where the fire sat sadly. She was beautiful, as then, And her smile was just as cold. The years flew by... But, as in those years, I felt a spiritual mistake. We talked about empty things, about what strangers say when they meet. And we parted in the night rain, Like two tired wanderers, vagabonds. And again I wander alone in the darkness, And the old melancholy squeezes my heart. Oh, how I remember everything! But no longer those, Those days when we loved carefree.

Autumn evening

The autumn evening is quiet and clear, The air above the river is transparent. And this beautiful day is sad, As sad is the path of human fate. I remember: it was just as quiet, When you and I were sitting by the window... The setting sun shone in the empty garden. And you were silent, and I was silent, And only a drawn-out cry could be heard in the distance... I understood That we were on a ship, Which was rushing into the darkness, Where there are no meetings, no happiness. And I could see the line, Beyond which only bad weather awaits.

Cold spring

It's a cold spring. Clouds are in the sky. A damp fog spreads over the field. And the wind, sharp and fleeting, whistles in the bare bushes. But I walk through the damp fields, And my heart is filled with melancholy - As in those years when once I walked here with you in the spring. Then it was a different spring, The gardens were blooming, the birds were singing, And you laughed, my dear, And life seemed like lightning to us. Now I am alone in the gray field, And the wind torments with cold, And only memory with a bright sigh Tenderly warms my heart.

In the quiet hour when the sunset has faded

In the quiet hour, when the sunset has faded and the colors of the evening sky have faded, I recall for the last time what was happiness and bread for me. You were my light and my dream, you were everything to me—heaven and earth. But love has passed, like a spring day, and only languor and pain remain. Where are you, my dear? In what lands do you live, of whom do you dream now? Or have you forgotten me in your dreams, as I once forgot your birdlike appearance? No, I don’t believe it! Memory will not die. And in my soul, as before, shines that distant and desired year, illuminated in the world by our love.

Night bonfire

A fire burns in the steppe at night, And the flame rushes like a heart. In the distance, a horse brays, And the stars shine through the door. We sit together, Silent, listening to the night. And it seems that we live In some kind of fairytale fragment. But all will pass. Dawn will come, The fire will die out, the steppe will cool, And we will part, loving, Never to meet again in life. Oh, how languid is love! How sweet it is to burn yourself in fire! And yet I will repeat again: I was happy, if only for a moment, in a dream.

Last love

Last love is like autumn, beautiful and sad. And in the heart, like autumn blue, it trembles with melancholy to the core. We know: soon everything will wither, the golden leaves will fall, and the winter cold will find us in a bitter, fateful separation. But still this autumn shines with the last happiness and warmth, and we will not yet abandon ourselves to the cold house of oblivion. While the crimson sunset burns, until the first snow falls, we will remember the desired moment, when love came forever.
