The most common causes of diesel fuel injection pump malfunctions

• •

Diesel engines are considered more reliable than gasoline engines. A significant portion of their malfunctions are related to failure of the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP), the engine's primary component.

Why problems may arise in the operation of the fuel injection pump:

  • The system has become depressurized due to temperature fluctuations or vibrations occurring during engine operation. This leads to increased load on the fuel injection pump, reduced service life, and other malfunctions. To resolve the issue, it is necessary to replace the system's sealing components, such as the YaMZ fuel injection pump seal.
  • Contaminated or worn plungers. This is caused by poor-quality fuel being poured into the engine, which may contain paraffin, sulfur, and water particles. These particles contaminate the plungers or cause corrosion. As a result, the engine begins to run erratically and consume more fuel than usual. Furthermore, water washes away the lubricant that protects engine components, causing them to wear out faster.
  • Fuel filter contamination. This again increases the load on the high-pressure fuel pump and reduces its service life.
  • Bearing wear is an inevitable process that occurs over time. It leads to overheating of bearings and the parts that come into contact with them, reducing their service life.
  • Uneven fuel delivery. Possible causes include dirty injectors or faulty plunger assemblies.
  • Problems with the cooling system. Possible causes include clogging, failure of individual components, or insufficient coolant or antifreeze. As a result, the engine overheats during operation.
  • Water entered the space between the bushing and the piston, causing them to seize. This is a serious problem that can lead to a number of other malfunctions and costly repairs.
  • The plunger return spring has broken. In this case, the fuel injection pump section will either fail completely or its efficiency will decrease.
  • Sometimes the cause of malfunctions can be a manufacturing defect, for example, the presence of cracks in the fuel injection pump housing.

At the first sign of a malfunction, it's advisable to visit a service station, where diagnostic equipment will be used to determine the cause of the problem and fix it. Timely diagnostics and repairs will save you money in the long run. After all, problems that go unnoticed for too long can lead to increased engine wear or other, more serious problems, which can ultimately lead to expensive and complex repairs.
