Situated north of Küçükkuyu, in a valley perched high on a hill, Adatepe is a stunning village where history and nature meet in captivating harmony. Once home to Turks and Greeks, this village underwent significant changes during the Great Population Exchange of 1924; when the Greeks arrived in Greece, Muslim Turks from Crete settled here. Adatepe, a fairytale town of stone houses surrounded by olive groves and cool, shady streets at the southern foot of the Kaz Mountains, attracts attention with its typically two-story stone buildings and courtyard gardens. Discovered in the 1980s by a group of people fleeing urban life, the village has been restored while remaining faithful to its traditional architecture. Today, locals and visitors live in harmony, meeting in the square where two ancient plane trees grow, in the heart of the village. Adatepe is a unique blend of history and nature. Here's what you need to know about Adatepe village...
The village of Adatepe is located in Çanakkale. If you're wondering where Adatepe is, it's located in Ayvacık, a district of Çanakkale.
How to get to Adatepe village?
To reach the village of Adatepe, you need to travel to Küçükkuyu. Küçükkuyu is a charming village located along the coast, just 3 kilometers from Adatepe.
From Istanbul by private car:
If you're departing from Istanbul, one of the most convenient options is to travel via Tekirdağ and Keşan. Taking the ferry from Gelibolu to Lapseki or from Eceabat to Çanakkale, you can continue towards Izmir and reach Küçükkuyu. From here, following the signs to the Altar of Zeus and climbing approximately 3 kilometers, you'll reach the village of Adatepe, nestled among olive groves.
Another route might be the Istanbul-Yalova-Bursa-Balikesir-Edremit-Altınolük-Küçükkuyu line. This route may be more suitable for those departing from the Anatolian side.
Alternatively, you can take the Ido Yenikapı-Bandırma ferry. From Bandırma, you can take the Biga, Lapseki, and Izmir route, or continue to Küçükkuyu and then to Adatepe via the Biga, Çan, Bayramiç, Ezin, and Ayvacık route.
By bus from Istanbul:
If you prefer to travel by bus, companies offer direct services to Küçükkuyu. Once in Küçükkuyu, you can take a short taxi ride to Adatepe.
By plane from other cities:
We don't think flying from Istanbul to Adatepe by plane is very practical. However, it may be a suitable option for those arriving from other cities. After landing at Çanakkale Airport or Balikesir Koca Seyit Airport, you can reach Adatepe by following the road towards Ayvacık.
Where to stay?
Hotels in Adatepe typically offer a quiet and peaceful setting surrounded by nature. Each offers guests an unforgettable stay with unique décor and a historic atmosphere. Guests can also stay in Ottoman-style mansions with a historic ambiance. These mansions are captivating with their architecture and details, bringing traces of the past into the present. Stone villas are also available for rent in Adatepe village, ideal for families and large groups. They can be rented daily or weekly. These typically offer comfortable apartments with large gardens, swimming pools, and spacious living spaces.
Places to visit
Take a stroll through the village streets.
The streets of Adatepe, lined with stone Greek houses and Ottoman mansions, offer stunning views that delight the eye. Some houses serve as both a hotel and a restaurant. Despite the village's hillside location, sea views are rare, as it was built this way to protect against pirate attacks. Over time, the village expanded toward the coast, and a port was built.
Visit the Stone School
Tash Mektep, which operated from 1947 to 1985 and was later restored and converted into a center for thought and workshops, attracts attention for its artistic, philosophical and literary activities.
Have tea at Village Coffee House
Upon entering Adatepe, you'll be greeted by a tea garden run by Ahmet Bey. Drinking tea in the pleasant shade of the trees is a must-do in the village.
Visit the olive oil production accessories exhibition.
The village has a display area for olive oil production equipment. This display area is easy to find while walking, or you can get directions from the villagers.
See the altar of Zeus
The Altar of Zeus is located on one of the peaks of the Kaz Mountains, offering a magnificent view of the sea. This hill is known in mythology as "Gargaros" in the Iliad and is believed to be the place from which Zeus observed the Trojan War. The altar's throne-like stone structure, accessible by stairs, and its location overlooking the entire Gulf of Edremit make this location unique.
Try herbal ice cream
Be sure to try the herbal ice cream in the village. Ice cream made with various herbs, such as ginger, thyme, and lavender, can be found in the ice cream shops near the village coffee shop.
