Raising animals is undoubtedly one of the best ways to boost mental health. They give us a sense of companionship and motivate us to get out of bed, knowing that a breathing soul needs us.
People typically own cats and dogs because they're the most common pets we grew up with. However, have you ever considered thinking outside the box and exploring other types of pets you could have at home? While this can be challenging due to lack of experience, we'll introduce you to four types that are easy to manage.

Capybara
Rodents have always been kept as pets due to their compassion and empathy. One unusual species is the South African capybara, which is related to guinea pigs and is considered the largest rodent in the world. They cannot be fully tamed unless you acquire a very young one to establish a bond and ensure its loyalty. To raise them properly, you must have an open space where they can run and release their energy. A water feature would be great, as they are semi-aquatic creatures that love to swim. Capybaras' diet is simple and inexpensive, as they enjoy eating grass and drinking plenty of water.
By the way, avoid raising this pet if you have small children, as they may be sensitive to unexpected movements. Some states prohibit them because they are considered exotic pets, so it's best to check your local laws before trying to adopt or buy one.

Glider
The glider is a unique pet with a funny name, gaining popularity thanks to its excellent communication skills. Related to the opossum family, it gets its name from its ability to glide from one tree to another using a special membrane that connects its front foot to its back foot. It's best to handle them when they're young to establish a bond that can help you both in the future. However, they're nocturnal, so you'll need to adjust your schedule to bond well with a glider.
If you want to raise gliders, you'll need a backyard with tall trees to simulate the wild environment they need, as they love to climb and jump from one branch to another. As for their diet, you can provide them with eggs, nuts, vegetables, and cooked meat.

Marine aquarium fish
Having an aquarium at home will undoubtedly add a colorful and happy atmosphere to the room. It's quite fascinating to watch the fish roam around and grow day by day. If you want to keep exotic species, marine aquariums are the best environment for a variety of fish to thrive. Furthermore, the aquarium should be large and deep so the fish have enough room to swim without feeling cramped in a small space. Fortunately, most species suitable for beginners require a similar diet, so you won't have to worry about confusing different feeding schedules.
If you're a beginner, one of the most beautiful species is the carbine fish, which is easy to care for. All they need is plenty of hiding places to overcome their territorial nature. Another stunning fish is the firefish, which adds a splash of color to the aquarium with its orange tail. They are friendly and can get along well with any other fish in the aquarium.

Hedgehogs
Some people have children and still want a unique pet that won't harm their little ones. Well, a hedgehog is the best choice because it's gentle, affectionate, and friendly. It's very small and can live anywhere in the household. However, you should make sure you have a cage with a spinning wheel so your hedgehog can exercise whenever it wants.
Hedgehogs require a lot of sleep, so interaction time is limited to the hours when they wake up to eat and play a little. It's important to make sure you have a veterinarian available to check their weight weekly, especially when they're young.

Serval Cat
There are several exotic cat breeds you can keep as a pet, but I think the serval is one of the best, mainly due to its long lifespan. While they're known to be a bit of a nuisance to other pets in the house when raised alone, they can be just as loving and playful as the average house cat... only MUCH more interesting.

Kinkajou
I'm not going to lie, I'd never heard of a kinkajou before researching this article, and yet I've discovered that this small, ape-like creature can make a good pet, living for 25-30 years with care and proper nutrition. But I've also discovered that they can be a bit mischievous.

Skunk
I'm lucky enough to live near someone who keeps skunks as pets, and I can tell you they're loving and devoted creatures, even letting them out in the backyard where there's no fence! They come back every time, and boy, can they be so affectionate, to the point of often snuggling up to you out of love! And no, they don't smell at all; in fact, she grooms them a lot because they enjoy it, so they smell wonderful!

Giant African land snail
This was my first exotic pet and is still one of my favorites. Snails are boring, slimy creatures, right? Well, yes, they can be a little slimy, but they can also be very funny and surprisingly loving, to the point of being quite happy to sleep in your hand. Trust me, they really are great pets (especially if you start giving them a little beer in the evenings), but they do require a lot of maintenance when it comes to cleaning the tank.

Madagascar hissing cockroach
Beetles aren't for everyone, but they're often overlooked for their fun, interesting pet qualities. They're certainly exotic and short-lived, but with careful planning and care, you can have a growing hive in a single aquarium that can last as long as you need. Even a single hissing cockroach can be a fun pet, but they don't live long on their own.

Fennec fox
The last one on this list might just be the cutest. It looks like a fox, but is the size of a cat, and acts like a dog! It's the perfect combination of everything people love about this animal, especially its playful nature. Just looking at those ears is enough to melt anyone's heart!
Although raising exotic and unique pets can be challenging, it's ultimately quite rewarding. You'll feel a sense of accomplishment, having successfully raised and bonded with a high-maintenance animal. Once you've earned its loyalty and friendship, you'll have a lifelong friend. However, if you enjoy keeping your distance and have a live aquarium at home, saltwater fish will make a wonderful addition to your living space.
