The difference is due to regulations: from 2023, new ambulances in the state emergency medical service must be yellow, while white ones will be gradually phased out. Therefore, the purpose of a vehicle is determined by its markings, not its color – ambulances transporting patients for elective procedures do not have «P» or «S» markings.

To sum it up

Color does not indicate different function – yellow and white ambulances with the letters P or S represent the same service: emergency medical technicians (EMT).

The decree of the Minister of Health dated January 3, 2023 establishes that yellow ambulances ; older, outdated ambulances may be used no later than December 31, 2030.

The letter "P"« denotes the main team (paramedics or system nurses), «"S"» - a specialized team with a doctor.

Medical transportation (transportation for dialysis, tests, home after treatment) is a different service: it is ordered by a doctor and not called by 112.

What is the difference between a yellow and a white ambulance?

For many years, white and yellow ambulances drove side by side on Polish roads—old regulations permitted both colors. This gave rise to a widespread myth that yellow ambulances were "low-class" or "low-grade" vehicles, while white ones were "true ambulances." In reality, even if they are marked as emergency medical vehicles, both perform the same functions.

Changes have been made By the Decree of the Minister of Health dated January 3, 2023 On the marking of the state emergency medical service system (Legislative Act 2023, paragraph 118). According to this regulation, specialized ambulances for state emergency medical service teams are yellow in color . The Ministry of Health justified this by standardizing the color scheme of vehicles within the system. Ambulances that began operating in the emergency medical service system no later than six months after the entry into force of this regulation may retain their current markings, but only until December 31, 2030. Thus, white ambulances will gradually disappear from the streets.

Yellow ambulance – what does it mean and what is it for?

If you see a yellow ambulance with red stripes, the words "AMBULANS" on the front and a letter in a circle on the side, it is ambulance service . It responds to life-threatening emergencies: accidents, heart attacks, strokes, and loss of consciousness. After calling for an ambulance, the dispatcher dispatches an ambulance.

According to the regulations, an ambulance must, among other things, have the following identification marks:

Graphic symbol of the state emergency medical service system on the rear doors, roof and sides.

On the front of the car there is a red inscription "AMBULANS", located in a mirror image.

Red letter "P" or "S" in a circle on the sides.

Reflective stripes - red around the roof perimeter, blue and red between the window line and wheel arches,

The team code name and the name or logo of the control room (e.g. ambulance station).

Yellow ambulance with the letters P and S.

The letter on the side indicates who is on board. «"P" — basic ambulance team — consists of two or three people authorized to provide emergency medical care: paramedics or nurses. «"S" - specialized team — consists of at least three people, including a physician. The medical dispatcher decides which team will be dispatched to the patient; both types of teams operate sirens and provide assistance in emergency situations.

Ambulance transportation – what is it and who orders it?

A completely different service is this transportation by ambulance . It transports patients whose condition is not life-threatening but who are unable to move independently: for dialysis, tests, rehabilitation, from one hospital to another, or home after hospitalization. These vehicles do not have ambulance identification marks (the letters P or S in a circle), although their color may vary.

It is not possible to order ambulance transportation by dialing 112. A medical prescription must be issued by a physician (or paramedic) with health insurance. The Law on Publicly Financed Health Services (Article 41) provides for free travel, including in cases of immediate or continuous treatment, as well as in cases of musculoskeletal disorders that prevent the use of public transportation. In other cases, travel may be partially or fully reimbursed – detailed information is available from the institution that issued the prescription.

Table: Ambulance and medical transport

Characteristic

Ambulance (yellow or white, with the letters P/S)

Ambulance transport

Task

Assistance in case of sudden threat to health or life.

Planned patient transportation

How to call

Emergency number 112 or 999

On behalf of a physician working in the health insurance industry.

Color

New cars are yellow; old cars are white until the end of 2030.

Lack of uniform labeling of emergency medical services.

Designation

The letter "P" or "S" in a circle, the symbol of the PRM system, the inscription "AMBULANS".

Without the letters P/S and the PRM system symbol.

Crew

P: 2-3 paramedics or nurses from the system; S: at least 3 people with a doctor.

Depending on the patient's condition and type of transport.

Examples

Accident, heart attack, stroke, shortness of breath, loss of consciousness

Dialysis, chemotherapy, transfer to another hospital

Financing

Within the framework of the state emergency medical service system

Free of charge in the cases specified in Article 41 of the Law, in other cases for a fee or partially for a fee.

When should you call 112 and when should you call for emergency services?

Call 112 or 999, If someone is unconscious, not breathing or breathing heavily, experiencing severe chest pain, showing symptoms of a stroke (drooping mouth, weakness, slurred speech), has been in a serious accident, or is bleeding heavily, the dispatcher will ask a few questions and decide which ambulance to send—the color of the ambulance does not matter.

If you need to get to the place of planned treatment, and due to your health condition you cannot use a car or public transport, ask your doctor to arrange for ambulance transportation . Yellow has been mandatory for new ambulances in Poland since 2023.

How to order ambulance transport?

Ambulance transportation is prescribed by a doctor or paramedic from the health insurance company. In some cases (Article 41 of the Law on Benefits), it is free; in others, it is partially or fully reimbursed.
