It most often appears as a bright red, purple, or bluish spot, sometimes slightly raised above the surface of the body, which is why it's often mistaken for a common birthmark.

The main feature of this formation is that it has nothing in common with malignant tumors and does not degenerate into cancer.

Hemangiomas are found primarily in newborns in the first weeks or months of life, although they can also appear in adults, for example, as localized lesions of the liver or vertebrae. The rate of development of these vascular nodules is unpredictable: they can rapidly increase in size over a short period of time and then suddenly stop growing.

A truly unique phenomenon of hemangiomas is their tendency to spontaneously disappear, a process known as involution. As the child ages, the vascular tangle gradually fades, decreases in size, and by 5–7 years of age, it can completely resolve, leaving no noticeable scar.

However, such a favorable course is not always observed, therefore any vascular neoplasm requires careful monitoring by a dermatologist or surgeon.

Types, causes of occurrence and stages of development

The formation of hemangiomas is based on a failure in the processes of vasculogenesis—the formation and growth of the vascular network during embryonic development or under the influence of local hypoxic factors.

In medical practice, a distinction is made between capillary (simple) hemangiomas, consisting of tightly intertwined small capillaries on the skin's surface; cavernous forms, formed by larger blood-filled cavities in the deep layers of the dermis; and combined variants. When internal organs are affected, hemangiomas of the liver are most often diagnosed—an asymptomatic vascular lesion that is usually discovered incidentally during a routine ultrasound examination.

The life cycle of a classic infantile hemangioma is divided into three sequential phases: active growth (proliferation), stabilization, and regression. The proliferative phase lasts from several months to a year, during which the tumor rapidly increases in size due to intensive endothelial cell division. This is followed by a plateau period, followed by years of natural regression, during which the vascular structures are gradually replaced by normal adipose and connective tissue.

Indications for treatment and modern medical methods

Despite its benign nature, a hemangioma can pose a real health risk if it is unfavorably located or grows excessively aggressively.

If a vascular node is located near the eyes, ear canal, larynx, or anus, it can mechanically block vital functions such as vision, hearing, or breathing. Furthermore, superficial hemangiomas in areas of friction from clothing often ulcerate, bleed, and become an open gateway for bacterial infections.

Assessment of the condition and choice of treatment tactics begin with instrumental diagnostics:

For superficial skin lesions, a dermatoscopy and ultrasound examination with Dopplerography, which allows assessing the speed and depth of blood flow, are sufficient for the doctor.

If a cavernous form or damage to internal organs is suspected, the patient is prescribed magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography with contrast, which provides a clear picture of the boundaries of the neoplasm and its connection with adjacent main vessels.

A watchful waiting strategy is only applicable to small, slow-growing superficial lesions that gradually regress on their own. If there is a risk of complications, the current first-line therapy is drug treatment with beta-blockers (propranolol, timolol), which artificially constrict blood vessels and inhibit endothelial cell division. Alternative and adjuvant treatments include selective laser coagulation for the removal of superficial lesions, as well as classical surgical excision or cryodestruction for isolated deep nodules.

A hemangioma is a benign tumor that develops from normal blood vessels.
