25 giants of the animal world

• •

The word "giant" usually conjures up images of ancient dinosaurs or space aliens. When it comes to the plant kingdom, we usually think of baobabs as enormous. But there are countless other creatures on the planet whose size can truly surprise us. These monsters don't just live in fantasy or imaginary worlds. They live with us today. This list includes the most impressive representatives of the animal kingdom. To feel like a tiny little thing in this big world, you don't have to eat a mushroom like Alice in Wonderland. Simply reading our selection is enough!

Hippopotamus

Funny, right? But these four-ton cuties are among the most aggressive. Statistically, these remarkable animals kill more people than toothy crocodiles and sharks. Whales are distant relatives of these animals. They've certainly made it onto land, but they're not willing to leave the water. However, it's best not to share a swim with these divers.

Eastern gorilla

The largest of the great apes, males can reach up to 220 cm in height. Their intelligence rivals that of a human, but unfortunately, this species of gorilla is critically endangered. Only about 680 individuals remain in the world. Habitat destruction is leaving these giants homeless. Poachers have also left their mark.

The largest breed of rabbit is the Flemish rabbit.

Cute and playful rabbits have always been, along with cats, symbols of fluffy creatures you want to cuddle. Just imagine a rabbit the size of an average dog! The largest breed of rabbit in the world was developed in the Middle Ages in the Belgian wilderness.

Giant squid

Giants have also been discovered among the squid. They lurk on the seabed at depths of about a kilometer, and it's no surprise that until 2004, they weren't even caught on camera. Previously, their existence was only suspected. These beauties left plate-sized sucker marks on unwary sperm whales.

Manta

The so-called "sea devil," with a wingspan of about eight meters, can leap a couple of meters out of the water. However, it only does this during the breeding season and in its natural habitat.

Great white shark

The largest and most aggressive fish in the seas. This five-meter-long beauty's only enemies are killer whales and humans. She'll happily eat anyone else. An endangered species, only about three and a half thousand individuals remain in the world.

The capybara is a peaceful rodent.

The largest rodent species. This South American native resembles a guinea pig in appearance, but its body length is just over a meter and its height is 30-60 centimeters. It makes a wonderful family pet. Of course, it's better to befriend rodents than to let them chew up your home.

Green anaconda

Some specimens of the world's largest snake reach eight meters. Only pythons can surpass it in size. But in terms of thickness, that's unheard of. This 100-kilogram carcass could swallow a human whole.

Nile perch

Another example of gigantic size is the human-sized perch. Although it's a river perch and lives in the Nile River, it has grown to an enormous size. It's even given another name: the "water elephant.".

Saltwater crocodile

It's best not to share a bath with this seven-meter-long beauty, the owner of two magnificent, powerful ridges on its back. The two-ton crocodile is the largest and most aggressive species of reptile, native to the shores of the Indian Ocean.

Maned Acerodon

A harmless bat up to thirty centimeters long with a meter-long wingspan, it's surprisingly peaceful and feeds on fruit. It has chosen the Philippine archipelago for this purpose. It is critically endangered due to deforestation and habitat pollution.

Komodo dragon

The world's largest lizard could very well be called a modern-day dragon. They feed only once a month due to their incredibly slow metabolism. But they are also incredibly voracious. They can eat their own weight in a single meal. And they can weigh over 80 kilograms while standing three meters tall.

Cassowary

The largest and most dangerous flightless bird in the tropics. They attack only to protect their young, but it's best not to anger a 85-kilogram, two-meter-tall bird. Even the translation of the breed's name, "horned cow," doesn't inspire confidence in these birds.

Killer whale

The largest member of the dolphin family. These eight-ton beauties roam the vast oceans of the world, excluding the Black, Azov, East Siberian, and Laptev Seas. These intelligent creatures, who have even been assigned a certain IQ, live in large families. It's easier to survive in this world together.

Sperm whale

The largest toothed whale is considered the planet's largest predator. Males can weigh up to 50 tons, while females weigh 20 tons. Sexual differentiation only occurs when they reach a height of fifteen meters. The population of these giants was sharply reduced by whalers. Sperm whales were harvested for blubber (used for fuel), spermaceti (cooled fat), and ambergris (used in perfumery as a scent fixative).

Japanese spider crab

The largest arthropod. Next to this four-meter-long crab, you'll definitely feel not only a speck in this world but also quite likely prey. But gourmets love to eat the crab's legs themselves as a delicacy. These long-legged creatures, with a three-meter leg span, live off the coast of Japan. The most agile can live up to a hundred years.

Southern elephant seal

This mammal species can weigh up to five tons. Given their size and aggressiveness, they easily qualify as one of the largest land-dwelling carnivores.

Dalmatian Pelican

This species of pelican is the largest flying bird, native to the Eurasian continent. These birds are approximately 180 centimeters long and have a wingspan of over three meters. Despite their size, they can glide through the air with the ease of a snowflake.

Ostrich

The hero of many funny and comical pictures is actually a highly aggressive bird. Although flightless, its legs allow it to reach speeds of up to 70 km/h. Therefore, among bipedal and flightless creatures, it is the champion in terms of run-up speed.

Giraffe

These six-meter-long, adorable creatures, weighing up to 1,200 kg, despite their gentle nature, can defend themselves by running fast. They can even outsmart predators like lions. They are considered the tallest mammal on the planet.

Moonfish

The ocean sunfish is the largest bony fish. It averages 1.8 meters in length and can reach up to 2.5 meters between the fins. They achieve such impressive sizes because, in addition to their bony skeleton, they have a large amount of cartilaginous tissue, which reduces their weight. These giants have the ability to change color when threatened.

Chinese giant salamander

An inhabitant of the cleanest and coldest bodies of water, it stands 180 cm tall and weighs around 70 kg. But Chinese medicine has driven this giant to the brink of extinction by exploiting its internal organs.

Polar bear

This seemingly teddy bear is considered the largest land predator on the planet. A three-meter-long, nearly ton-weight animal can kill a human without even blinking an eye. If you're out for a walk without a gun, the only way to escape it is by running, and only if you're a better runner than it.

Savannah elephant

This giant record-holder is listed not only in the Red Book but also in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest land mammal. It can easily trample all its enemies' limbs. It can fight back against all attackers, except humans. Weighing up to 10 tons, it is second only to humans, who wield their strength with impunity.

Blue whale

Except for the giants of myth and legend, the blue whale is the largest in the history of our planet. Just think, 150 tons of live weight can feed on nothing more than small fish and plankton.

It's a good thing that majestic nature preserved these magnificent record-breakers in limited numbers. Otherwise, the planet would have drifted out of orbit, and people would have gone mad with such proximity. But humans and technological progress are still to blame for the disappearance of many unique creatures.
