The most miraculous icons in the world

• •

Over the two thousand years of Christianity's existence, many venerated icons have accumulated. People pray before them everywhere—from Argentina to Kamchatka—asking God, and especially His Mother, for help in matters, healing from illness, and the salvation of the soul.

We'll tell you about the 10 most miraculous icons in the world, both Orthodox and Catholic. They're listed alphabetically.

10. Our Lady of Czestochowa, Poland

kocd1gb1This is one of the oldest and most revered icons in Poland, although its nickname among the people is somewhat ominous. It is called the "Black Madonna" because the colors of the sacred image have darkened considerably with age. According to legend, it was painted by the Evangelist Luke.

Over the years, the icon has seen much and even suffered damage—in the 15th century, during the Hussite revolt, one of them struck the icon with a sword several times, the marks still visible today. It is believed that it was the presence of this icon that helped the monastery defend itself against the superior Swedish forces in the 17th century. For 40 days, 70 monks and 180 volunteers defended the holy site against a Swedish force numbering 4,000. After the siege, King Casimir crowned the icon—a Catholic practice of "rewarding" especially revered icons that have proven their reputation for miracles.

Since then, the Czestochowa Icon of the Mother of God has been considered the patroness and protector of Poland, and pious Poles strive to make a pilgrimage to it at least once in their lives.

9. Pochayiv Icon of the Mother of God, Ukraine

iann3d2rLike many revered relics in the Belarusian and Ukrainian lands, the Pochayiv Icon has changed its religious affiliation several times. Initially, it was "Orthodox," then, after the monastery where it was housed passed into the hands of the Uniates (Byzantine Catholics), it became "Catholic.".

But both recognized its miraculous status, and just half a century after the icon's conversion to Catholicism, it was crowned by the Pope. Overall, during its "Catholic" years (1721 to 1832), the icon became famous for performing 539 documented miracles.

The most famous miracle attributed to prayers before this icon is the monastery's deliverance from the Turks, who had already besieged it and were about to plunder it. However, through the prayers of St. Job of Pochaev, the Mother of God herself appeared before them. The terrified Turks began shooting at her, but the arrows, of course, fell and struck them down. The enemy fled in terror.

Today, the Pochayiv Icon remains, as it was many centuries ago, in the main cathedral of the Lavra of the same name in Ukraine.

8. Osenovitsa, icon of the Mother of God from the Rila Monastery, Bulgaria

xplggqlzThis icon itself is a remarkable sight. A very small image of the Mother of God, adorned with a silver halo, sits in the center of a latticed field. Each cell contains the relics of a venerated Orthodox saint. This combination of a sacred image and a reliquary is very rare in Orthodoxy.

The Osenovitsa Icon is one of Bulgaria's national relics; according to legend, it was gifted to the monks of the Rila Monastery by the Byzantine Emperor back in the 12th century. Since then, it has been a popular destination for those seeking solace from their heavenly Intercessor.

Our contemporary, Archimandrite Kliment of Rila, who served as the monastery's abbot for many years, kept a record of miracles performed before the icon, officially documenting them with witness signatures. As it has been for many centuries, the icon remains in the main cathedral of the Rila Monastery.

7. Zaraysk icon of St. Nicholas, Russia

q1q3gmx3Saint Nicholas is one of the most beloved and venerated saints among Orthodox Christians. There are countless icons of him, and we will tell you about the most miraculous of them all—"Nikolai Zaraiskii.".

This icon has been venerated in Zaraysk since ancient times: Russian tsars, grand dukes, nobles, and peasants traveled to pray before it. An entire cathedral was built specifically for "St. Nicholas of Zaraysk," where the icon remained for a long time until it was taken to Moscow "for restoration" in the middle of the last century.

Since then, the miraculous icon has remained in the Andrei Rublev Museum. It was able to return to its hometown only once—during the city's 850th anniversary celebrations.

6. Icon of Saint Luke of Crimea, Russia

kmdjj0uwThis saint is practically our contemporary. He died only in 1961 and was canonized just 30 years later. Luka Voyno-Yasenetsky worked his entire life as a physician and surgeon, and wrote several books. During his life, he treated people and continued this practice after his death.

The best option, of course, is to make a pilgrimage to his relics, which are housed in the cathedral in Simferopol. However, if traveling to Crimea is not possible, there is another option. One of the saint's miraculous icons, containing a portion of his relics, is housed in the Assumption Church in Putinki, Moscow.

5. Our Lady of Kazan, Russia

deppjq4tThis is the very icon in whose honor the national holiday of November 4th was established. It appeared to the girl Matrona in the 16th century after a gigantic fire that burned almost half of medieval Kazan to the ground.

And so, in the ashes, a ten-year-old girl found an icon of the Mother of God, completely unharmed by the fire. Its miraculous discovery could not help but influence people's minds, and the icon began to be considered special. It was with this icon that Patriarch Hermogenes blessed the militia of Minin and Pozharsky. It is believed that the Russians owed the defeat of the Polish troops, who greatly outnumbered the militia, to the intercession of the Mother of God.

True, the icon's fate was tragic. In the early 20th century, it was stolen from the church, the thief selling the frame and burning the icon itself. However, many copies of it have survived, many of which are considered miraculous—for example, the Tobolsk and Tambov icons. There are also copies in the capitals of St. Petersburg and Moscow.

4. Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, Mount Athos, Greece

pei5ix4nThis is one of the oldest and most revered relics in the Orthodox world, the first mention of which dates back to the 9th century. During the iconoclast revolt, the icon's owner, in order to save it from desecration, prayed, cast the image into the sea, and pushed it away from the shore.

Almost two centuries later, the monks of the Iveron Monastery on Mount Athos saw a pillar of fire in the sea—the sacred image's announcement of its arrival. The monastery's abbot reverently brought the icon to the church, but the icon had its own opinion about its intended location. The next morning, the monks were surprised to find the icon hanging over the monastery gates. This happened several times until, finally, the Mother of God appeared to the abbot in a dream and told him not to tempt her any more by moving the icon arbitrarily.

Over the centuries, the icon has become renowned for its miracles, so much so that even Turkish soldiers, who loved to plunder the monasteries on Mount Athos, did not dare remove its richly decorated frame. Currently, only men can see one of the most miraculous icons in the world, as women are prohibited from entering Mount Athos.

3. Guadalupe Icon of the Virgin Mary, Mexico

ov1ma1hkThis is the most revered icon in Latin America. It is believed to be unpainted. Another distinctive detail of the image is that the Virgin Mary is depicted as dark-skinned, resembling a beautiful young Indian woman.

The origin of this image is linked to a miracle that occurred in the 16th century to a peasant of Spanish-Indian descent. In the middle of winter, the Virgin Mary appeared to him on a hill, and the hill itself was covered in blooming roses. The amazed peasant gathered the roses in his cloak, and when he later showed them to the bishop, everyone fell to their knees upon seeing the image of the Virgin Mary on the cloak.

The miracle that occurred triggered a massive conversion of the Aztecs to Christianity. The cloak with the Virgin Mary's image was displayed for veneration for nearly five hundred years, yet its state of preservation is astonishing. Scholars still have not reached a consensus on how exactly the image was applied to the fabric.

Every year, about 14 million people make a pilgrimage to the shrine, which is located in Mexico City.

2. Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, Russia

hlb2gk3cLet's travel from distant Mexico to the capital of Russia, Moscow. It is there, in the Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi, that one of the most famous icons in the world is housed: the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God. This is one of the most beautiful images of the Virgin Mary, painted no later than the 12th century in Byzantium and sent to Rus' as a gift to the Kievan Prince Mstislav.

Since then, she has served as the patroness and protector of the Russian land, saving Moscow from Tamerlane's sack. Fortunately, despite its antiquity, the icon is available for veneration by the faithful. A special shrine was created for it using the latest technology, maintaining a safe microclimate within it for the ancient painting.

1. Budislav Icon of the Mother of God, Belarus

yms2xbdyCatholic churches in Belarus contain many ancient, sacred icons that have performed numerous miracles. Some of them originate from the Orthodox tradition, while others, like the Budislav Icon of the Mother of God, were brought from Rome itself.

She stayed on Belarusian soil for only a short time, but within half a century she had become famous for numerous miracles, so much so that a book ("Zodiac on Earth") was written about her. It recounts over 40 cases of miraculous healings of people who prayed to the Budislav Icon.

However, Catholics recognized her merits much later than the Orthodox (she was crowned only at the end of the 20th century). The venerated icon is located in the Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary in the village of Budislav, Minsk Region.
